Job Summary

Scope and responsibilities include: Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical systems, apparatus, and electrical and electronic control components of stationary and mechanical equipment such chillers, boilers, diesel & gas engines, generators, hot water heat exchangers, air compressors, motors, pumps and auxiliaries to provide District Heating & Cooling services to customers by performing the following duties:

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses cause of electrical malfunction or failure of operational equipment such as transformers, motors, relays, switches, and control and monitoring devices.
  • Installs wire and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment.
  • Terminates wiring to machines and equipment and connects cables and wires between machines and equipment.
  • Replaces faulty wiring and electrical components of machines such as relays, switches, and motors, and position sensing devices.
  • Diagnoses, tests, and repairs or replaces faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards.
  • Replaces electric motor bearings.
  • Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of electronic units and systems to diagnose cause of malfunction.
  • Aligns, adjusts, and calibrates equipment according to specifications.
  • Maintains records of repairs, calibrations, and tests.
  • Connects unit to be tested to test equipment such as signal generator, frequency meter, or spectrum analyzer.
  • Reads dials or digital displays that indicate electronic characteristics such as voltage, frequency, distortion, inductance, and capacitance.
  • Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify proper operation.
  • Records maintenance actions taken on work order forms.
  • Opens and closes valves as required for proper system operation and mechanical isolation.
  • Opens and closes circuit breakers for proper system operation and electrical isolation.
  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
  • Starts devices to test their performance.
  • Initiates purchase order for parts and services.
  • Prepares legible and understandable work orders for required preventative and corrective maintenance.
  • Reads and understands technical manuals and system piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance in accordance with technical manual procedures.
  • Reads, understands, and complies with all plant safety and regulatory procedures.
  • Able to be qualified and perform all essential duties of an O&M Plant Technician.
  • On call for equipment issue call outs and emergencies.
  • Qualified and available for shift coverage at other facilities.
  • Completes all O&M Preventive Maintenance work orders assigned by the CMMS or supervisor.
  • Prepares Corrective Maintenance work orders.


Qualification Requirements:


Experience and Education:

· Four to six years related experience in the duties described above.

· Associate degree or technical certification in HVAC, Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls.



Skills and Competencies:

  • A level of working understanding and competency in our industry
  • Familiarity with principles of refrigeration and thermodynamics. Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical theory. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

· Ability to interpret and use manufacturer's manuals and drawings.

· Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

· Must be skilled at reading process flow diagrams, control and instrumentation diagrams.

· Must be capable of recognizing and analyzing equipment problems and taking appropriate corrective action.

· Must be able to use troubleshooting tools and equipment.

· Must be detail oriented.

· Must have good verbal and written communications skills.

· Background in District Heating and Cooling, HVAC, power, refinery, chemical, or paper industry.

· Ability to operate a personal computer system. Network operations and troubleshooting is a plus. Ability to become proficient is required.

· Must have demonstrated mechanical, instrumentation and controls aptitude.


Conditions of Employment:


· Successful completion of Criminal Background Check and Drug Test

  • Valid California Driver's License
