Instrumentation & Electrical Technician
Location: Frederick, Maryland
 
Position Overview
A manufacturing organization is seeking an Instrumentation and Electrical Technician to support plant operations within a maintenance environment. This role provides hands-on electrical, controls, and automation maintenance across multiple production lines and auxiliary systems. The ideal candidate will have strong troubleshooting skills with PLCs, HMIs, and automated equipment, along with experience maintaining industrial electrical distribution systems up to 480V.

  • Maintain a strong focus on workplace safety while supporting a zero-incident safety culture.
  • Ensure full environmental compliance in all maintenance and operational activities.
  • Provide primary electrical, instrumentation, and controls maintenance support for manufacturing lines and supporting systems.
  • Troubleshoot automation systems, PLCs, and HMIs; modify existing programs to improve sequencing, alarms, diagnostics, and system performance.
  • Perform industrial electrical work within control panels, power systems, and wiring up to 480V (AC and DC).
  • Complete and maintain required electrical certifications in accordance with facility standards.
  • Support equipment calibration, control programming updates, system installations, and machine setup activities.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to diagnose and resolve equipment issues.
  • Review, update, and redline electrical schematics, system layouts, and technical drawings.
  • Analyze operational data to identify performance issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain and support critical environmental and process control systems.
  • Perform both scheduled preventive maintenance and emergency troubleshooting/repair as needed to support production.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as required.
 
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical degree in industrial electrical, controls, or automation disciplines strongly preferred.
  • 4–5 years of relevant industrial maintenance, electrical, or controls experience (combination of education and experience considered).
  • Candidates with less experience may be considered for a developmental role with progression opportunities.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency working with electrical distribution systems and wiring up to 480V.
  • Experience supporting industrial automation systems and PLC platforms (Siemens-based systems preferred).
  • Familiarity with industrial drives, HMIs, and process automation software preferred.
  • Basic computer skills, including database, documentation, and internet-based systems.
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) is a plus.
  • Experience using CMMS platforms such as SAP or similar maintenance systems preferred.
  • Ability to become certified to operate powered industrial vehicles such as forklifts and personnel lifts.

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands and arms to handle tools and equipment.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently lift up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, with heavier loads handled with assistance.
  • Work environment may include exposure to moving machinery, elevated work areas, dust, fumes, chemicals, heat, electrical equipment, and high noise levels.
