The Lead Operator is responsible for the effective, efficient, and safe operation of the plant and its auxiliary systems and equipment. The Lead Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis to ensure that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner. 
 Plant operations include but are not limited to plant start-up and shutdown and routine maintenance. The Lead Operator directs all plant operations activities during assigned shift. Carries out routine inspections and monitoring of operating components to provide accurate and reliable operation and reporting of plant status.

 Primary Duties
  • Responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis
  • Maintains equipment at established control set points to ensure reliable, efficient and dependable operation of the process (renewable fuel) unit. 
  • Starts, stops, operates and troubleshoots all plant and auxiliary systems and equipment, 
  • Receives and analyzes laboratory results, compares them to product specifications and makes corrections.  
  • strong experience in pretreatment of rendered fats, recycled cooking oils, and other vegetable oils including experience in acid/enzymatic degumming, water washing, and continuous bleaching and filtration
  • Moves and sets controls, such as knobs, valves, switches, levers, and index arms, on control panels to control process variables, such as flows, levels, temperatures, pressures, and chemicals, by automatic regulation and remote control of processing equipment, such as heaters, furnaces, compressors, exchangers, reactors, quenchers, stabilizers, fractionators, rechargers, absorbers, strippers, debutanizers, and towers.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and works with appropriate maintenance staff or other plant staff to correct systems, equipment, and machinery malfunctions
  • Utilizes specific and defined procedures developed in the plant safety and operating instruction manuals to shut-down and start-up plant equipment with the goal being to achieve safe, consistent and optimum plant output
  • Maintains timely and accurate recordkeeping of operating logs, timesheets, work orders and other administrative documents as required
  • Learns and applies knowledge of refinery and plant science fundamentals to diagnose problems and to recommend or implement corrective actions. Fundamentals include but are not limited to: heat transfer, fluid dynamics, process chemistry and accident control techniques.
  • Participates in the administrative maintenance and upgrading of operating instruction manuals, technical references and preventive/predictive maintenance records
  • Assists with the training of new and existing operators and other plant staff
  • Required to adhere to the company safety policies and comply with all site-specific safety requirements and procedures
  • Identifies safety hazards and takes corrective actions as necessary
  • Attends safety meetings and training programs and participates in plant safety programs as required
  • Ensures that lock out tag out processes and work permit processes are issued and administered in compliance with company policy in a safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and directed by Operations and plant or company management members
  • The Process Operator reports to the Operations Manager and works directly with the Shift Supervisor and may also receive direction from the Maintenance Manager or other plant or company management.
 
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ten or more years of progressive plant operation experience, preferably in renewable fuel unit, including full competency in outside operator job duties and distributed control systems experience
  • Able to visualize and comprehend the dynamic conditions and possibilities that occur in the fuel generation process
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the use of a radio and group presentations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence accurately.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. 
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to calculate figures and amounts including percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. 
  • Knowledge of plant hazards and approaches to protecting both personnel and equipment.
  • Be productive and stay on task with little or no supervision.
