Job Summary:

The Shift Team Leader (STL) will take a key role in the daily operation of the facility utilizing established procedures, standards and daily targets for efficiencies and compliance. This individual must ensure that the units remain within the design and operating PSM limits at all times.   This position will also plan, supervise, and direct all operations and maintenance activities of one of four shifts, ensuring its effective operation by coordinating and directing employees, assigning tasks, and monitoring performance of subordinates. This role also provides the lead role during nights and weekends at the facility. This is a rotating (days/night) 12-hour shift position including weekends, and holidays that requires reliable attendance.

        

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise, direct, and lead the day-to-day activities of operations at site for one of four shifts or a relief to ensure safe and quality production, on spec targets and meet identified goals
  • Provide leadership for assigned operations team including setting accountability and setting expectations of crew
  • Lead position on off hours and weekends for the refinery, including managing emergency situations as the Incident Commander initially until relieved
  • Maintain a safe operation of the facility and a healthy work environment by following, implementing and enforcing Company safety standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations
  • Lead the operator shift team consisting of the console operators, outside operators and logistics to insure safe, stable, and reliable operation 
  • Lead or assist in the investigation of injuries, accidents, near-miss incidents, exceedances on shift 
  • Provide a clean, organized, and safe work environment and maintain area with safety audits and walk-throughs. Set the expectations for those on your crew for these requirements
  • Review Work Requests and approve; prioritize per policies
  • Provide shift management and supervision of shift teams for the processing units.       
  • Responsible for Safe Operation & Production, Emergency Response, Operation and Maintenance, Training progression, and Health and Safety for 24-hour shift operation
  • Provide senior level experience in Operations, Management, and PSM in support of operations.
  • Perform scheduling, training, operator qualification, process optimization, turnaround coordination, procedure revision and development.     
  • Support Process Engineering to resolve operating issues                
  • Manage, supervise and coordinate production and maintenance expenditures through planning and execution of maintenance blocks for processing units; responsible for training and qualifying field and panel operators
  • Meet production operational standards by implementing production, productivity and quality standards, work with supporting personnel to achieve optimal production and profitability of asset performance 
  • Ensure adherence to Company operating procedures, policies and process standards
  • Provide leadership on troubleshooting for operational issues 
  • Coordinate with plant scheduler and lead on-shift scheduling changes / coverage for vacations, sicknesses, training etc. 
  • Oversee the operator training of assigned crew to ensure team is properly trained in a timely and effective manner
  • Address routine personnel issues including training, coaching and counseling and disciplining subordinates on assigned crew 
  • Take lead on problem solving operational issues on shift 
  • Ensure that equipment and systems are prepared and available for maintenance per schedules 
  • Lead shift operational/safety/environmental meetings to discuss planned activities and maintenance jobs schedules for effective planning
  • Review and approve as appropriate Work Order notifications for need, priority, accuracy and ensure proper information is provided to support maintenance activities and scheduling
  • Lead reliability, compliance, quality, PSM and safety programs for assigned crew
  • Coach and develop personnel on application and use of Refinery Safe Work Practices and Procedures 
  • Manage day to day operation of including directing operating personnel in optimization of unit throughput, and assigning maintenance priorities
  • Prepare daily log / turnover at shift change
  • Wear fire-retardant clothing and other personal protective equipment, such as SCBA, steel-toe shoes and ear and eye protection 
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States, hold a valid driver's license, and be able to pass drug test and background check
- Process knowledge and understanding of refining / hydroprocessing 
- Operational experience on hydrogen plant, gas plant and hydroprocessing units
- Knowledgeable of unit operations and processes to allow troubleshooting, guidance and leadership to operators 
- Qualified on the DCS console position to allow troubleshooting, optimization of operation and allow assistance during start up and or upset conditions      
- Ability and willingness to work a rotating shift schedule with potential for overtime; this is a 12-hour rotating shift with days and nights

- Proficient on Honeywell DCS console operation       

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

- Supervises operations personnel on assigned shift
- Supervises logistics operations personnel in off hours, weekend and holidays when Logistics Lead or Logistics Shift supervisor is not present
- Oversees the daily workflow of the department
- Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
- Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy

 

Education and Experience:

- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required
- 10 years of experience in refinery, petrochemical or chemical role, with two (2) years of experience in leadership role required
- Associate degree in business, science or technical discipline and three (3) years of experience in refinery, petrochemical or chemical role or equivalent military experience preferred
- 5+ years of console operator/process lead experience is preferred
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, teamwork and leadership skills essential     

 

Physical Requirements: 

- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
- Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time
- Requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
- Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring equipment and materials
- Must be able to climb ladders and or stairs on tanks, vessels and structures; wear respirator; work around equipment containing high pressures and temperatures and various chemicals      

Compensation: Rate $43.00 - $60.00 hourly DOE
