Piping Designer
Role Description:
Position provides support to engineering or client's design team by providing layout, detailed drawings, sketches, diagrams, etc. Position will work in a variety of disciplines within drafting such as some aspects of civil/structural, mechanical/piping, and electrical/instrumentation/controls.
Job Responsibilities:
Use AutoCAD or drafting software to develop designs
Complete new CAD drawings to file for reference purposes
Update existing CAD drawings to reflect modifications and improvements to existing jobs
Maintain P&IDs, ISOs, and other construction blue print
Develop sketches on proposed drawings, flow sheets, and develop completed designs from sketches
Confirm designs are consistent with Valero's site drafting and engineering standards
Perform dimensional checks on parts and materials
Maintain and organize drawing filing system
Communicate with engineering and mechanical teams regarding new and revised drawings
Prepare bill of materials
Take field measurements, field walk downs, and verifications
Perform calculations in order to support their designs and assist in the production of detailed schematics
Interface with the design and engineering team as well as contractors
Seek out information and troubleshoot with design and engineering
Incorporate conceptual layouts and detailed design into complete client package (detailed finished product)
Maintain organized .dwg files and electronic correspondence in order to help keep design work moving forward while also creating a history for engineers to follow during check print approvals
Utilize an understanding of industry standards in order to produce drawings as construction documents
Work with engineering, other professionals, and SMEs to obtain input to recommendations
Recommend modifications and changes for design improvement and design simplification
Participate in technical reviews of specifications, designs, codes, and other requirements
Qualifications & Skills for Success:
Associates Degree in Drafting or a Drafting certification is desired, not required
Minimum of 5 years of experience working drafting and design in petro-chemical industry
Knowledgeable of various petrochemical standards and codes: ANSI, ASME, PFI, etc.
Ability to read and understand multiple discipline drawings including piping, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, civil, structural, and architectural
Ability to comprehend rough sketches and specifications in order to update existing drawings as well as creating new drawings
Ability to stay on schedule in an open forum environment
Highly proficiency with AutoCAD (orthographic (2D) and/or isometric (3D) designs)
Proficiency with CADWorx is desired
Advanced knowledge of basic petrochemical industry engineering design standards
Proficient with Adobe Acrobat
Proficient in reading mechanical drawings, blueprints, isometrics, P&IDs, etc.
High level of technical and scientific knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to practical problems
Ability to understand field changes and red-line drawings
