Civil Engineering Technician - Water (Level 5)

We are currently seeking a Civil Engineering Technician with advanced experience in civil site design to join our Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) team. Under general supervision, this role supports the creation and modification of engineering deliverables using electronic applications and established standards and procedures. This position also provides technical guidance to less-experienced technicians.
You'll be responsible for preparing site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and Bentley Microstation. The role supports projects related to water, wastewater, linear pipelines, and other water infrastructure needs. Significant experience in Civil 3D is required, particularly in pipe/pressure networks, grading surfaces, and plan and profile development.

Key Responsibilities:
Engineering Standards
  • Apply and help enforce current engineering standards, systems, document control procedures, and departmental guidelines.
Quality / Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure deliverables are accurate and meet required quality standards.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Review design inputs for consistency and code compliance.
Engineering Production
  • Create and develop deliverables using various design tools and applications.
  • Perform material quantity estimates and dimensional checks.
  • Continuously improve processes and tools used to develop project deliverables.
Project Coordination
  • Coordinate with other project team members to minimize design conflicts or errors.
  • Support field efforts and assist with project closeout, including as-built documentation and quantity take-offs.
Client Focus
  • Support internal clients while understanding the needs and drivers of external stakeholders.
Knowledge Sharing, Innovation & Technology
  • Share knowledge of the latest design technologies and workflows.
  • Exercise sound judgment in interpreting and applying design inputs.
People Management (if applicable)
  • May provide work direction, mentoring, and guidance to junior staff or team members.

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Typically a minimum of 5 years of related experience in civil engineering design
  • Proficiency with:
    • Autodesk Civil 3D
    • Autodesk AutoCAD
    • Bentley Microstation
    • Bluebeam
  • Experience using appropriate electronic design and drafting tools
  • Advanced ability to interpret and create detailed engineering deliverables
  • Intermediate knowledge of:
    • Industry standards and design trends
    • Document control systems
    • Quality assurance practices
    • Construction and constructability principles
    • Engineering principles and design guides
    • Related disciplines, procurement, and contract administration

Education:
  • Diploma or certificate preferred
  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design-Related Technology is preferred
