Substation Relay Technician
Location: 100% Field-Based / Nationwide Travel
Employment Type: Full-Time, Long-Term Assignment
Travel: Extensive (100% travel unless relocation is approved)

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer/Substation Relay Technician to support long-term electrical testing and commissioning projects. This role is fully field-based and requires extensive travel to client sites. The ideal candidate has strong experience with protection and control systems, RTUs, and telecom equipment within high-voltage utility or power generation environments.
This is a full-time position with long-term stability and opportunities for overtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, test, and maintain:
- Protective relays
- Power line carrier equipment
- Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs)
- Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
- Communication processors
- Perform functional testing of protection and control circuitry for:
- Transmission lines
- HV bus systems
- Transformers
- Circuit breakers
- Feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks
- Execute RTU and telecom upgrades for multiple clients
- Review, document, and submit accurate test reports for client and regulatory use
- Interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and communication drawings
- Identify discrepancies in drawings and communicate issues clearly
- Accurately complete time, expense, and reporting documentation
- Maintain assigned company vehicle in good working condition
Technical Experience Required
- SEL microprocessor relays,
- RTUs and communication processors, such as:
- GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, Novatech
Preferred Technical Experience
- GE microprocessor relays (C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, T60)
- Experience with SEL, GE, ABB, and Westinghouse relays
- Substation RTUs and telecom equipment for both brownfield and greenfield projects
- Scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and project management of protection & control or RTU projects
- Familiarity with NERC CIP requirements
Physical & Compliance Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and work outdoors
- Ability to travel extensively and work overtime as required
- Valid driver's license and ability to qualify for company vehicle driving privileges
- Pass MVR review, pre-employment drug screening, background check (7-year history), and additional client-required clearances
- Complete and pass 30-hour OSHA training
- Fluency in English (read, write, speak)
