Senior Controls Engineer
Location: Within an hour of a U.S.-based manufacturing facility (Dallas, TX; Tuscaloosa, AL; Frederick, MD; Joplin, MO)
Description
A leading manufacturing organization is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to provide advanced support for optimizing the efficiency, reliability, and automation of both new and existing web-handling production processes. This role requires specialized expertise in Siemens PLCs, including 505 series and S7 models, to support various manufacturing facilities across the U.S.

  • Apply advanced knowledge of manufacturing standards, including operational playbooks and playlists, to support process improvement efforts.
  • Tune, synchronize, and sequence Siemens drive systems (S110, G120, S120, Micromaster, Baldor 18h, and others) in web-handling applications.
  • Read and troubleshoot electrical machine schematics.
  • Configure PLC messaging instructions and network settings.
  • Develop Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), controls narratives, and testing protocols.
  • Create and refine PLC programs and operator interfaces in compliance with programming standards, including modular programming and object-oriented design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish and uphold enterprise-wide controls, drives, and hardware documentation standards.
  • Mentor and train controls specialists, electricians, and engineers.
  • Coordinate with external contractors to specify and install equipment, controls, and drives.
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies in controls and web-handling, leading their implementation as needed.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with plant personnel to identify and pursue new projects.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of industry experience in controls/drives programming.
  • Proficiency in Siemens drives and controllers (emphasis on S120s, Simatic, and Simotion).
  • Experience in PLC logic development, primarily Siemens 505 and Step 7 (S7) systems.
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing systems and web-handling processes.
  • Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and SCADA systems.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15%.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, including company-provided training programs.
  • Preferred: Experience with Siemens S120 drive optimization and Wonderware object-oriented HMI development.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Ability to remain stationary for long periods and traverse office and production floors.
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, and airborne particles.
  • Occasional exposure to weather extremes, confined spaces, and acidic or caustic chemicals.
  • Hearing protection and a respirator may be required in certain environments.
